Finnegan School of Irish Dance
Competitive Dancing
Competitive Irish dance occurs on both national and international levels. There are many competitions held annually in our area: in Oakville, Mississauga, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Orangeville, Burlington and Hamilton. In addition, there are competitions throughout North America and Europe. Each year there are also major championships such as the Regional Oireachtas, North American Championships, British and Scottish Nationals, All Ireland’s and Oireachtas Rinnce Cruinne or the World Irish Dance Championships. Between the months of May and November, in the Eastern Canadian Region, a competition is held almost every weekend providing lots of choice regarding which ones you would like to enter and how far you would like to travel.
*Being a competitive dancer does not mean that all competitions must be entered. The choice of how many feiseanna you decide to enter, and at which venues, is entirely up to you and your child.

Recreational Dancing
Recreational dancers are classified as those who choose not to enter into competitions. At the Finnegan School all dancers will be trained at a competitive level, thus, at any point in time the dancer may decide to compete (even if they only try once!) because they will be prepared. It is never mandatory that dancers enter into competition. However, families are encouraged to attend a local feis in our region in order to gain an understanding of what they are like and to help them decide if they wish to enter a competition. At no time is it mandatory for a dancer to enter into competition, however, it is strongly encouraged and supported no matter what level of involvement is chosen.
